10294: Dearth Of Digital Dames.

Advertising Age Creativity 50 includes “Girls Who Code” creator Reshma Saujani. The initiative’s website states, “Girls Who Code is a new organization working to educate, inspire and equip 13- to 17-year-old girls with the skills and resources to pursue opportunities in technology and engineering.” Women use the Internet 17% more than men; plus, they represent the fastest growing online and mobile demographic, responsible for over 65% of content on social networking sites. However, women are underrepresented in technology fields. In other words, there’s a dearth of dames in digital agencies too. Sorry, Karen Mallia, but your grand theory doesn’t hold up.

When Ms. Saujani approached General Electric and eBay about joining her “Girls Who Code” initiative, she couched her proposition in terms big business understands: It’s good for your bottom line, because while the people using your products are women, the ones creating them aren’t.

It’s that kind of smart, incisive thinking that makes her a creative problem-solver. The ex-deputy public advocate founded a program that teaches the basics of technology and engineering to promising young women in New York. It takes off this summer, with more cities and more partnerships planned for 2013.
