Essay 507

No way to treat a lady with a MultiCultClassics Monologue…

• Should performers like Mimi Marks (pictured above) be categorized alongside strippers and other adult entertainers? Marks, incidentally, is a female impersonator. And now an alderman in Chicago is seeking to remove such artists from the zoning mandates that restrict adult entertainment. “If somebody walks on stage and they’re a female acting as a male, what part of that is so objectionable? It’s commonly accepted as mainstream entertainment. It’s an artistic form now,” argued the alderman. “There’s not the fear surrounding it that there was 40 or 50 years ago.” Right, these cabarets may soon replace Chuck E. Cheese as the venue of choice for family fun.

• Yanni won’t be charged with domestic battery after all. The musician was arrested last month for allegedly beating up his girlfriend. But nothing could be proven, and the cops were forced to admit, “Essentially, it came down to a ‘he said, she said.’” Which means Yanni is free to assault the public with his lame music.

• Rep. Cynthia McKinney argued her altercation with a Capitol Police officer started due to the cop “inappropriately touching and stopping” her after she walked past a security point. Her lawyer proclaimed, “Congresswoman Cynthia McKinney, like thousands of average Americans across this country, is, too, a victim of the excessive use of force by law enforcement officials because of how she looks and the color of her skin.” McKinney held a press conference, flanked by artists-turned-activists Harry Belafonte and Danny Glover. Yeah, that’s pretty much the picture of an average American.
