Essay 460

I want you to read this MultiCultClassics Monologue…

• A Pew Hispanic Center study shows undocumented immigrants numbers have grown to roughly 12 million, with 7.2 million employed. This means they make up nearly 5 percent of the total U.S. workforce. “If you kick out 11.5 million to 12 million people,” said a senior executive with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, “it will bring this economy to a screeching halt.” But it will absolutely delight millions and millions of Minutemen, Nazis and assorted conservative bigots.

• A fifth member of the hate crimes commission in Illinois has resigned (see Essay 449). The latest quitter’s letter of resignation proclaimed the group was “damaged beyond repair” by recent controversies. It all started when another member refused to criticize offensive comments made by Louis Farrakhan. The member, Sister Claudette Marie Muhammad, proclaimed during a radio interview, “For those who try to condemn me because of the honorable Minister Louis Farrakhan’s remarks… which were perceived by some as anti-Semitic, it’s ridiculous, absolutely ridiculous.” Yes, it’s ridiculous to think Farrakhan would ever intentionally offend anyone.

• A man in Ohio has been charged with making thousands of obscene calls to cell phones — with records indicating 2,623 calls over a 20-day period. He probably insists he was just having conversations with Louis Farrakhan.
